Best ever Apple Crisp

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall” – F. Scott Fitzgerald. I wonder if he was referring to Apple Crisp!? If he was, he was for sure referring to my family recipe (credit to my Auntie Liza) for this best ever Apple Crisp. A true fall classic in our home and a beautiful way to celebrate the changing of the seasons if you ask me.

Recipe for Best ever Apple Crisp

Ingredients:

  • 10 cups of peeled and sliced B.C. apples (approx. 10 small apples) see notes for apple varieties
  • 2 tbsp cinnamon
  • 6 tbsp flour
  • 2 tsp brown sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 1/2 cups oats
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • A pinch of kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 cups cold unsalted butter

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F.
  2. Peel and slice apples. Place them in a rectangular baking dish (I used 10” x 6” but a 9” x 13” will also work).
  3. In a small bowl, combine 2 tbsp cinnamon, 6 tbsp flour and 2 tsp brown sugar. Mix well then pour over the apples and toss to coat the apples.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the 2 cups of flour, oats, brown sugar and salt. Mix well then to this mixture, add thin cubes of cold butter and cut in using a fork or knife (careful not to get it too warm).
  5. Spread the butter mixture over the apples.
  6. Place in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes then broil for 1-2 minutes, until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!

Notes:

  • I used B.C. Gala Apples which is a sweeter variety. If opting for a more tart variety such as Granny Smith, you may want to add another 1-2 tsp of brown sugar to coat your apples.
  • This recipe can easily be halved as this makes a BIG batch. Cook time will remain the same.
